It was three days before Halloween, and Gabe—formally Professor Gabriel Castro Nogales—was all alone for the first time in years.
He let the door to Calaveras Hall close behind him with a click. It was almost ten at night, and his students had all gone home. He was in charge of some of the university’s Freshman Composition English classes, getting first year students whose high schools had neglected their language education up to speed.
