Point of View: Reading in Nostalgia Mode

A Brightness Long Ago

I’m reading a book. Which is not news, in and of itself, although regular readers will know that I somewhat famously went for years without reading any, due to my insane work demands and habits. But this is different. I’m reading an actual physical book – a hardcover, in fact – something I can hold in my hands that doesn’t disappear when I set it down (though it often does flip back to the first page). It was my birthday gift to myself – the work of an author I love that I can actually touch and smell. OMG, I … Read more

Point of View: Filling in the Gaps

filling in the gaps

Doctors read journals and take continuing education courses to learn the latest techniques for their specialty. Teachers attend seminars and learn new teaching methods to help their students learn better. Even artists often pick up new mediums and styles throughout their careers… how many periods did Picasso go through? Writing is no different – we thrive when we spend time in the medium that we write. I grew up addicted to reading. I would often read a new book in days, sometimes staying up until three in the morning to finish a particularly addicting tale. I read thousands of different … Read more

POINT OF VIEW: Feeding My Writer Brain

Books on a Plate - Deposit Photos

It’s been forever since I sat down with a good book and just read the hell out of it. I’m a compulsive worker bee, and these last five years have not been kind to our business, requiring ever more of my time, focus, and energy just to try to keep things running with my husband Mark Reading is one of the things that had to go. There just wasn’t enough time. It’s funny. Writing a novel used to seem like such a daunting thing. Now reading one does. As writers, we feast on words. We absorb them from the world … Read more

POINT OF VIEW: Writing Is My Escape From Pandemic World

space portal - deposit photos

As I write this, I am sitting in the parking lot at the grocery store waiting for our weekly grocery curbside pick-up. It struck me, driving over here, how small my world has become since the pandemic began. Once a week I leave home to go to the post office, then to the grocery store, and then back home again. Every four weeks, I plug in the Prius to charge up for the next month. I’ve been doing this now for more than six months, and only on a couple occasions have I gone farther than this two-mile radius from … Read more

POINT OF VIEW: The Joys of Reading

I’ve forgotten how good it feels just to read. It seems ironic that I’m a writer who doesn’t read anymore, doesn’t it? It’s like a chef who never bothers to taste any cooking other than his own. Or an artist who never visits an art gallery. I have no time. My work life is severely regimented. I’m one of those incredible overachievers with a truly disgusting work ethic, spared only from relationship ruin by the fact that my amazing husband works right here in the trenches beside me. Last year, I shared here that I’d found little bits of time … Read more

POINT OF VIEW: Squeeze Reading

For years, I have maintained that I simply had no time to read. My days are so tightly scheduled that I couldn’t even think about picking up a new book, let alone diving in with the intent to finish the whole damned thing. That changed this last month. Not because I suddenly had a lot less to do. No, it was thanks to the humble porcelain toilet. Really. See, I figured out that do have a batch of otherwise unstructured time. I am sorry if it offends anyone’s delicate sensibilities, but bathroom time is also the perfect reading time (as … Read more

Video From My Time Tested Books reading

Me, Mark, Vanessa

Here’s the full video (thanks Mark) for my reading/signing last night. I talk for a bit about how we came to Sacramento, how I came to writing, and about “The River City Chronicles.” The reading itself starts at about thirty five and a half minutes in, or at -21:45 on the countdown clock. Hope you enjoy it! Posted by J. Scott Coatsworth on Thursday, October 4, 2018

Lavender Library Reading

Lavender Library - Scott

Hey all, Just had a fabulous reading event here in SacTown at the Lavender Library. We had six authors read – Amy Lane, DL Kent, SA Collins, Liz Faraim, Pat Henshaw, and Me… click each name for the video on FB live. 🙂 Each one’s 8-12 minutes long. And there were cookies. So many cookies. Thanks to the great folks at the Lavender Library for facilitating this event – We had about thirty people show up! We plan to do these quarterly, so next one will be in the Spring!
