Today’s a crazy day, so my column is – by necessity – a bit short. I just wanted to remind you (and myself) that sometimes it’s the little things that make life better.
I was out watering some plants in our backyard yesterday, or I was about to. When I went to reach for the hose, I spotted this little guy.
My heart leapt in my throat, and I quickly checked for rattles on its tail. There were none and my heartbeat slowed to something approaching normal.
We stared at each other for a moment, both surprised to find this strange thing in our space.
Turns out he was lapping up water with his little tongue from the end of the hose (the green spot at the bottom of the photo). Poor guy was just thirsty. So I carefully turned on the faucet and poured him out a bit more, ran inside to grab my phone, and snapped this photo of my surprise visitor.
A little internet research turned up his breed – he’s a gopher snake, handy little critters that help keep the rodent population down. Seeing this little bit of impromptu nature turn up in our garden made me smile.
What’s one unexpected little thing that helped improve your week?
